Does anyone know what rights to privacy a member of the jury has during jury selection. Does a potential juror in the jury pool have to disclose what his marital status is and how many kids he has. In Los Angeles County, CA all jurors were questioned about marital status and number of kids for a domestic violence case. I consider this an invasion of privacy for a potential juror. angry I can understand the Internal Revenue Service needing to know this, but I believe a juror's right to privacy is greater than a judge's and 2 attorneys need to know about family status.

I have jury duty Feb 8, 2010 in Florida. I asked the Clerk of Circuit Court the same thing about marital status and kids, the "right to privacy", and freedom of speech (not to answer these questions). They said they had no idea if I had to answer them. They suggested I write the Judge a letter about my concerns. So I did and dropped it off today. I also questioned the 4 questions that ask: "Have you or any member of your family ever been accused, complainant, or witness in a criminal case?" + variations regarding personal injury and other lawsuits. I don't understand why I have to provide an answer for my spouse and children. So I asked the Judge if: 1. I was legally obligated to answer any of these questions 2. Could I invoke my freedom of speech right and decline to answer any question and 3. Would I be held in contept of court for refusing to answer any question.

I have no idea if the Judge will respond. But I will post it he does or doesn't. I hand delivered the letter to Clerk of Circuit Court.
